The Knitted Bible Comes to Sturry
“Surprising, joyous, humbly miraculous”, “See it if you can.” (The Guardian, 13 November 2023)
From Sunday, 27 July to Sunday, 3 August, St Nicholas’ Church, Sturry will host the “Knitted Bible”. This is a representation of 36 Biblical scenes as tableaux of knitted figures, skilfully crafted by the community of St George’s United Reformed Church, Hartlepool, County Durham. It has already been exhibited extensively across the country and - indeed - has been recommended by The Guardian newspaper, “See it if you can; I went twice. I am neither Christian nor a crafter, but you would have to have a heart of stone (unlike the boulder in scene 32, the Resurrection, neatly knitted in grey wool) not to be moved by this endearing and intricate labour of love.” During the exhibition, the church will be open daily from 12 noon to 4pm. Lunches and teas will be available. Jane Freeman, Churchwarden and Church Steward at Sturry and District LEP said, “It will be a great joy and privilege for us to share this work with as many people as possible. We look forward to seeing many visitors.”

How to Find Us St Nicholas’ Church, Sturry is about 3 miles from Canterbury City Centre and is accessible from the A28 main road, via Sturry High Street. There is plenty of parking available in the area – in the High Street, Church Lane and The Hamels. Parking is permitted at the top end of The Hamels for church use, despite the ‘No parking’ sign erected by the Junior King’s School which is intended to safeguard parking for parents of pupils on schooldays. There are regular trains and buses to Sturry and the church is a short walk from Sturry railway station.
